"Your rivals can do it for less"
Allan Revich is principal of Toronto-based Work It Out, a mediation and negotiation consulting firm. When his friend Michael asked if he could help him get a great deal on a new DVD player and sound system, Revich was more than up for the task. He used the Internet to see what systems were being offered at less than $400 - the maximum Michael was willing to spend. "Deciding that in advance meant we'd avoid being oversold." says Revich. The two then visited three different retailers to compare prices. They jotted down notes, listing the brands, features and prices. "By the time we arrived at the last retailer we had a very good idea of what we could expect for $399," says Revich.
At an audio-visual speciality retailer, the sales representative was well-informed about the products on offer. They found a system they liked better than anything else they'd seen at the other two stores, but it was $50 more than they were willing to pay, so they told the salesman. "He said he thought he could offer us a better price," says Revich. "Rather then making a lower offer, I asked, "How much better?" THan, the salesman knocked of $50 off the sticker price, and Revich and Michael walked away with a system with more features, more power and better speakers than any of the others they had seen, for exactly what they wanted to pay:$399.
Haggling Tip: "Be prepared well in advance with lots of information," says Revich. "And know your alternatives. We knew we could get the system we wanted elsewhere, so we felt no pressure to buy."
